When you think about it, does it really matter what a candidate believes about abortion and same-sex marriage?

Why would you care if a candidate doesn't share your socially conservative values?

It's not like a president is going to single-handedly overturn Roe vs. Wade or force an amendment to pass banning gay marriage nationwide. A president has power, but not that much power. When you think about it, does it really matter what a candidate believes about abortion and same-sex marriage?
It is highly relevant to Supreme Court nominations. When you think about it, does it really matter what a candidate believes about abortion and same-sex marriage?
It certainly matters to me. I don't know, there's something about being barred from a basic human right, that of marriage, that kinda irritates me. Yes, it matters. But, to me it is more irritating than anything that all the candidates focus on, as a means for getting votes, abortion and gay marriage. I think it's crap that a select group of people are being used as political pawns, but then when it comes down to it I'm supposed to say, ';oh, I will only vote for the economy or homeland security.'; That is BS. When they run on the main issues, I will vote on the main issues.
I agree, and nothing is permanent - as shown by the fact that people are trying to get the constitution amended. If there was a president who was able to ban gay marriage nationwide when the majority of Americans disagree, all that would happen is a different president would be voted in next time who would overturn it and legalize gay marriage. Nothing's the end of the world, short of a nuclear megalomaniac president.
It doesn't matter at all this time around. Most people just want to be able to be able to earn a decent wage for a hard weeks work.
It matters a great deal and the reason that it does has nothing at all to do with specific sexual acts or specific medical procedures and everything to do with the US Constitution and the rule of law and Presidents taking an oath swearing to uphold both.

An American woman has a Constitutional Right to have an abortion .Yet we casually allow candidates to tell us that if elected they will try to take away a woman's Constitutional Rights. The fact that we allow that to happen is scary .Why stop with women ? Why not go further ?

When the Supreme Court finally legalizes gay marriage it will use the Equal Protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment as its basis .

Somebody will ask Since it is the State that issues marriage licenses without which no marriage in house of worship is legal and since that license carries few if any restrictions to it's being issued ,how can the State arbitrarily decide to make homosexuality a restriction ? and the answer is that it can't

Once again we casually and in some case openly encourage presidential candidates to proudly tell us how they to plan to continue the persecution of a sub group of American citizens.

To finally answer your question Yes it does matter because any candidate who is willing to violate the Constitutional Rights of Americans should be not be allowed to serve.
No it doesn't . He's not running our lives.. contrary to ';some'; popular belief that we need government to run our lives..
It's like some ';evangelical'; voter in S.C. said on TV, ';We still have to eat!'; This was in response to his decisions on who to vote for, implying that he is not as concerned this time about social issues such as abortion and gay marriage. And that's a good change amoungst those people. Maybe they are finally actually ';seeing the light';.

And that's why Huckabee isn't getting the support he thought he would by playing the ';religion card'; when he's in a religious state such as S.C. This change has made me very happy, since I'm a gay man, and it really hurt and angered me that it seemed more important to people that I not get married than it was to get Bush out of office. It was insane, and look where that kind of thinking got us.
yup... the politicians just like to use these hot-button social issues to stir up the extreme fringes of their parties (works for both the left and right).

In economics terms, they are really meaningless.
I guess it doesn't because Bush ran as a Christian and didn't support either. Abortion is still legal and more states have passed laws for same-sex marriage's than ever. So No I don't think it does.
that's what's wrong with this country.i don't care if the president support or dosn't support gays or abortions.i care what they will do with this country
You are %100 right. I am not for gay marriage and I am do not care for abortion. HOWEVER, what difference does it make if the candidate is for it or not. Gay marriage will most likely happen no matter what. Also, this will not affect me in the least. We should only vote for three reasons.

1) Economy - jobs and creation of jobs

2) Education - a complete upgrade from grades k - 12

3) Last but not least (Military and protection)

Everything will fall into play if those things I mentioned are done correctly. Once again, to answer your question. It does not matter if he/she agrees with me concerning sam-sex marriage or abortion. As long as he or she is efficient.
i have my opinions about those subjects but i don't think it matters much this time either. we need someone who can get this country back on it's feet and raise wages or lower everything else. if the government can print up all this money to give away then why can't it raise minimum wage to a decent level like $10 an hour?
