Why does a gay union need to be called marriage?

Different terms means different things. Marriage is a term used to describe a union between a man and a woman.

Why not use your creativity to create a new term?

Trying to force people to call your union marriage smacks of trying force your views on others. Why does a gay union need to be called marriage?
Because everybody wants what they can't have. Why does a gay union need to be called marriage?
It's rather odd, don't you think, to define the marital contract in terms of the parties involved, rather than the rights and obligations implied by the contract. When men started to become nurses, the profession was still called ';nursing.'; When women were given the right to vote, it was still called ';voting.'; A kiss is still a kiss, no matter who the kissers are.

Giving a different name to same sex unions has psychological implications. Moreover, it would have legal implications, because it would make it easy for laws and regulations to exclude gay couples.

';The definition of marriage depends on not only the historial period, but also on the geographical location and the cultural traditions of the individuals involved in the marriage relationship.

A general definition of marriage is that it is a social contract between two individuals that unites their lives legally, economically and emotionally.';
';Separate, but Equal'; argument doesn't apply here because they have the same rights under a civil union. Separate but equal applies to different treatment, and it's just a term.

The problem with legislation is that it's a step towards legislating morality, which is unconstitutional. You can't force a church or ordained minister to marry a gay couple if it goes against their morality.

Labeling has no bearing on equality.
Marriage in general just means the joining of two entities. They're not trying to force their views on normal folks, they're just trying to dodge the revulsion that usually accompanies the unnatural by trying to legitimize it. Kind of like democrats calling themselves liberals, when in fact that's one of the very last things they are in reality.
Those that say marriage is a religious matter conveniently overlook the fact that the issuance of marriage licenses is a civic function, NOT a church function. Marriage is a ceremony. If a particular church refuses to perform the ceremony, that's their prerogative... but the church collectively does not have the right to say your marriage is illegal.

I also think any church that abuses the principle of Separation of Church and State by using their tax exempt money to support a political issue (Prop 8) should lose their tax exempt status.
civil unions don't have the same financial benefits as marriage.

I'd be okay with civil union if they had the same benefits of marriage. I don't care about fighting over a silly word. I just want to be with my partner and have the same benefits of a married couple.
I would ask the reverse question. Why does it need to be kept separate?

The entire reason conservatives do not want the word marriage used is because they do not want gay relationships to have the same legal status as traditional couples. Separate but equal, remember?
What does it matter to you? Will it personally affect your life if a gay union is called a ';marriage';? Will you not be able to sleep at night because gay partners have the same rights as any other married couple?
Marriage can mean either a ';legal'; marriage or a ';church'; marriage in this country. They are different. No church will wed a couple that does not have a marriage license from the state. States allow non-church marriages. In fact, they don't even ask.
Yes, we are all people. Maybe a marriage should be redefined as a untion between two people. Sometimes different terms instigates prejudice.

My dad was gay. He died a very lonely man because of prejudice people like you.
Why does a straight union need to be called marriage?

If straights are so opposed to calling a gay union ';marriage,'; why don't we come up with something that's neutral and applicable to all?

Just a thought...

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Well, Pied, ';why do we have names?'; is not what I would call a well thought out response.

But if you really want the answer, it's rather obvious: names (and words) are symbols to represent through language concepts, ideas and aspects of the physical world. If you are going to call a sort of human behavior marriage--that is, the formal joining of two adults together in an emotional/love relationship with certain legal rights/responsibilities--then the sex of those who choose to participate in such a union is irrelevant to the arrangement it describes.

I hope that answers your rhetorical (and not terribly bright) question.

Cheers.
Equality under the law. Why not create a ';Operating License'; for female Asian drivers...Same thing as a driver's license but let's just call it different for every population. Right?

And no one says you have to call it a marriage, you can call it whatever you want: But the government license (which is all this is about) should be equal for everyone.
Let's call it mawwiage, in honor of Bawney Fwank.

Because calling it something else would demonstrate the concept of ';Separate But Equal'; which is ethically %26amp; constitutionally incorrect.

Why are you so afraid of english words in the dictionary changing? They change all the time! Should we ban modern dictionaries?

It isn't reality that needs to reflect words............

It's WORDS which must reflect REALITY.

Marriage in the U.S. has been redefined before.

It used to mean a union between a white man and a white woman.

Marriage was redefined to be race-neutral, and now gender-neutral.

Refusing to call it marriage is like saying their relationship is not as worthy or special, which is insulting %26amp; slander.
Do you mean a rose by any other name would smell as sweet?

A marriage is a union and if all components are working then they can bring forth a child.

THAT IS A MARRIAGE!
I think farriage is a good word. And yes, it's about trying to force their views on the rest of the country, especially religious people.
Yeah they should called something like Gayiage
Because Liberals want to repeal The First Amendment.
isn't a rose by any other name still a rose?
Never
