What does it say when both Iowa and Vermont are more progressive than California with respect to gay marriage?

Same-sex marriage just became legal in both Iowa and Vermont with a very, VERY small chance of it being overridden by bigoted voters.

Yet in California, a supposed bastion of liberals, it is constitutionally banned. What does this say?

Does it say that other places are becoming more progressive or that California is going 20 year backward and becoming more conservative? What does it say when both Iowa and Vermont are more progressive than California with respect to gay marriage?
I was so disappointed when California changed the state constitution to discriminate against a minority group. It was even worse because they did it by lying and exaggerating in their ads. If the anti- 8 side had been better prepared and challenged the lies sooner, 8 would have lost.

I hope California gets it's head out of it's butt and overturn that hateful law. I want my state to catch up to Iowa.

I am proud of Iowa and certain California will reverse 8 sooner rather than later. What does it say when both Iowa and Vermont are more progressive than California with respect to gay marriage?
I'd really prefer to see it as other places becoming more progressive.

I think that, if it did any good at all, Prop 8 drew attention to marriage equality, so you could argue that California's sudden bout of bigotry could have spurred Iowa and Vermont on. Vermont, at least, is a very liberal state, and the fact that it has now granted marriage equality is not surprising to me.

California has also been fighting to override the marriage equality ban, so it's not necessarily doomed as a bigoted state.

Maine is fighting for marriage equality, too! See link.

Let's be optimists. :)
Only part of California around the area of San Francisco is looney-liberal. Same sex relations should have the same rights as anyone else but not call it being ';married';. Call it partnered or something and the opposition will wane some. Flaunting anything in someones face doesn't accomplish anything but pissing people off. Simply, if anyone thinks having sex with the other sex is only to reproduce is the way things should be, you're full of sh--. Born and raised in Iowa and it's always been democratic, but I don't know where the whacko liberals came from.
Well actually vermont is the first state to ever vote to make gay marriage legal.

In mass and iowa the courts over turned laws passed by the people, to make gay marriage illegal.

Thats what happened in Cali too, the courts over turned the law passed by the people to ban gay marriage.

So they people voted again, to ban gay marriage.

All those progessive blues states, banned gay marriage.
Well, unfortunately, it's banned in California because of bigots in the population. It will be banned in Iowa the same way, but with far higher margins against gay marriage. Vermont, I'm not sure... they're pretty progressive there. The thing is, the legislatures or courts in Vermont, California, and Iowa are all the ones that legalized gay marriage, and then the ignorant masses voted it out in California and other states.
There is a difference with California, in that those other states do not have the same kind of resident-driven amendment process.

In California, the same action was taken (judges determining that the same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional). However, because of California rules, the residents were able to put forth the amendment that changed the California constitution, and therefore overturned the judge's decision.
Some have stated that California is the state to follow, but obviously it's not now! I'm so glad that gay people are having the right to marry their partners. It's about time!

I also feel kind of badly about California because it was seen as such a progressive state for so long, but now obviously Iowa is more progressive--who would have thought!
There are a lot of conservatives in the rich bits of Southern California. The governor is Republican, though the liberal types don't seem to mind him too much (apparently his liberal wife is a moderating influence). Gay marriage WAS legal there, but managed to get revoked- at the same time the State as a whole voted for Obama, no less. I don't see it lasting.
While parts of California have traditionally been more progressive, the rural and northern part of the state have always been conservative... This is the state that elected arch conservative Ronnie Regan to governor at the height of the ';hippy era'; (1967-1975), remember? (in fact, did you know that the actual neighborhood of ';Hollywood'; was originally established as a retirement community for IOWANS in the early 1900s? The famed Hollywood sign was originally a promo from a real estate company and said ';Hollywoodland';..) Glad I live in Iowa...
Gay America has California in the palm of its hand.

It's not a matter of if.............it's a matter of when.

There are two potential times for this to happen:

1. by June 3rd, 2009 a ruling on the court case is due.

2. June 8th, 2010 elections

and btw: Same sex marriage was legalized in the country of Sweden last Wednesday, becoming the 7th nation in the world to do so.

New Hampshire is next!
I think it is a matter of time (even for states like Texas) before gay marriage is legal in all states. Seriously how does a married gay person threaten me?

I think the Canadian Prime Minster Pierre Trudeau said it best when he said ';the government has no right in the bedroom of its nation.';
California has never been a ';bastion'; of liberals. You just have to realize that there is more to that state than San Francisco and Los Angeles. There's a reason why California has a Republican governor.
Despite rumors, CA is actually fairly neutral.

San Fransisco is liberal, San Diego is conservative, the rest about even.

Don't forget, we have a republican Governor and a democratic legislature.
It says that normal everyday people realize that marriage shouldn't be a right and exclusive to just men and women who want to make that mistake, everyone should be able to go all in.
Remember, Utah is next door to California and the Morman church paid for much of the anti gay marriage campaign in California.
It shows that the Mormon Church didn't have enough money to sway the votes in those states. Take the Mormons of Utah out of California's politics, and things will change FAST !
it says that those two states don't have the large population of predatory lawyers just waiting to file the lawsuits to which such legislation will open the door...
It says there was a lot of misinformation during the Prop 8 initiative in California.
I don't think they had the Mormons spending tens of millions on anti gay ad campaigns.
That people cannot be judged based on the state they live in.
That the west is still young and naive.
It was the African-American vote in California that put Prop 8 over the top. According to exit polls, 70% of African-Americans voted yes, while all other ethnic groups were right around 50%. (53% of Latinos voted yes, while 51% of both Caucasians and Asians voted no.)

So Barack Obama banned gay marriage in California just by running for President. When will the gay community hold him accountable?
There is nothing progressive about allowing gay marriage. It's very liberal but not at all social progress. Marriage is, has always been, and should always be between a man and a woman. Let's hope that California always sticks with this moral definition of marriage.
VT did it within the poltical system and by representatives of the people.

IA did it through the courts JUST LIKE CA DID BEFORE THE PEOPLE VOTED TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION.

The people of IA have not had the chance that the people of CA had, so it remains to be seen who is more progressive
It shows that the people don't want it here and TWO TIMES told our lawmakers that. The heterophobic judges and lawmakers tried to push their morality down our throats, but thankfully it looks like our second vote in favor of traditional marriage will be respected.

I PRAY the people in those states rise up and hold the judges accountable.
I wouldn't say recognizing a man's ';right'; to stick his ding-a-ling inside another man's poop shoot progressive.

I call it an abominable perversion, just like God's Word does. Romans 1:26-27.
Your idea of progressive is my idea of decline. This is not a good thing it is regressive to animal behavior.
I would hardly call Sodom and Gomorrah 'progressive'.

It means those commie marxists will have to find another way to impose their will.
It says that Iowa and Vermont are full of immoral deviants.
It says bad things about Iowa and Vermont.
Gay marriage is bad and nasty.
