Can a UK marriage visa expire if you leave the country for too long?

My partner is El Salvadorian and he is living in the UK as we have a civil partnership, so he is here on a marriage visa. We want to go away travelling for 6 months, will this mean when we come back we will need to reapply for the visa? Will this 'look bad' for when we try to convert the marriage visa into UK citizenship? Can a UK marriage visa expire if you leave the country for too long?

kitty sue had it almost right.but not quite.

Under your marriage visa i would strongly recommend that you do not leave the UK for more than a couple of weeks or you may find problems with the immigration gestapo when you return.

Advice is wait until you have indefinate leave to remain before you go abroad for an extended holiday

When you have indefinate leave to remain then you are allowed to go abroad for up to 2yrs.

Reasons are

If you are on a spouse visa then when you apply for indefinate leave to remain you need to show documents that you have lived together at the same adress in the UK over a two yr period without recourse to public funds. You can not show this if you are living abroad.
If you are gone for more than 180 days in a year, his residency is no longer considered ';continuous'; for ILR/naturalisation purposes. And once he has ILR, he can only be out of the country for 90 days in the year prior to becoming naturalised. So take a shorter holiday until he becomes a citizen

The Home Office make you account for every entry and exit when applying for ILR and naturalisation. I have to keep a diary of all of my travel (and I do a lot with work) so I can show the Home Office when I apply for ILR next year
your visa will expire before your return it will not last that long you will have to book a wedding date as soon as you recieve your visa
