Why is gay marriage considered a controversal issues?

Gay marriage bans were on the ballot in 30 states and it passed 30 different times most times passing by large margins..It passed in the most liberal state in the union, california TWICE.

So why is gay marriage considered controversalwhen it's clearly the popular choice? Why is gay marriage considered a controversal issues?
Religious factions have been proven wrong so many times in the past that it is starting to be ridicules. That is why they should never be part of politics. I bet some of them still refuse to believe that the Earth is a sphere and not the center of the universe. Good thing some people stood up to them and maid some of them see a shed of light.

Personally I could not care less if a woman want to marry another woman or a man want to marry another man. It won鈥檛 prevent me from sleeping at night. What business do we have dictating anyone if they can marry or not? Is one of the 10 most sacred commandments about respect?

It may be important for a society to have religions but it should not be at the expense of others. If religions and religious people would stick to their 10 commandments nothing more nothing less; things will start going so much better on this world. In my view, it is the only thing that makes sense from them.

If Churches want to discriminate marriage and not perform gay marriage that should be there business but I think we should be civil and mature enough to recognize civil gay marriage and allow gay couples to have the married status.

Why is gay marriage considered a controversal issues?
In my opinion, it has to do with peoples' (Americans') religious traditionalism. Although many Americans no longer go to church or call themselves ';religious';, the traditions of those religions are still practiced throughout our society and engraved in our culture. Same sex marriage has always been taboo in religious conservative cultures. Marriage as we see and perceive it in America is primarily a religious tradition. When people say ';marriage is between a man and a women';, I believe they are only viewing ';marriage'; from a religious context and not from a legal stand point.
Marriage is considered to be a union between a man and a woman. Any other union is not marriage. It is not the popular choice in any other country,
It's a very personal subject. Popularity doesn't mean anything. Once upon a time mullets were popular. Controversy comes when you are denying something as personal as marriage for reasons as personal as religion.
The law and government has no place in restricting the rights of anyone to marry if they wish to do so!

Why are they interfering with loving relationships, they are cretinous hypocritical bigots!
because there are people who just don't like gay people, and can't see it any other way
