Did California make a good decision? In your opinion, please state your answer.Did California make a good decision in legalizing gay marriage?
The Republican-leaning California Supreme Court ultimately made the correct decision in overturning the proposition voted on by the people. Simple reason, it was discriminatory.
And the same reason why the Supreme Court shot down the Jim Crow laws, which had support from the will of the people.
Attitudes have changed quite a bit since the proposition was voted on over a decade ago. I suspect the next one will fall short of the necessary majority to win in November.Did California make a good decision in legalizing gay marriage?
sure I think it is just fine. People who object on religious grounds are ignorant of the fact that nobody can make their particular church or pastor marry gay people. By and large these folks are going down to the courthouse and performing a civil ceremony. If I wouldn't object to two men or two women signing any other kind of contract to share money and assets, why should I care if they call the particular contract a marriage contract?
Of course it is a great and historical decision.
The book ';The Purchase of Intimacy'; (see amazon) offers a survey of the history in America of how laws have changed as societal norms have changed around what is and isn't an acceptable relationship in society.
Laws usually take longer to change then society norms, but that should not really be surprising.
What might be surprising is that laws do eventually catch up, and that the trends in law and in society is for more open, more egalitarian, and less discriminatory understandings.
The current ruling is well in line with that history, and parallels the same Court's 1948 ruling regarding miscegenation (look it up :) and our current ';who cares'; attitude about interracial marriages.
Personally No.
Its a mochary of the word Marraige, but divorce also did this.
On the other hand, if to people are in ';love'; (i suppose if they say they are :S) Then they have the right to be happy to :)
I'll second Caldude1, and suggest a reading of Marbury v. Madison.
Yes, to the best of my knowledge two gay people marrying doesn't hurt anybody.
I don't believe marriage should be determined by government! So, my answer would have to be NO.
No. I am a Christian and being so, as well as the fact that this nation was founded on Christian principles, my answer has to be no.
No, God Almighty is punishing us with floods as we speak.
oh wait - that's the mid-west that's being smote by the Lord,
never mind
Yes.
No, a judge made that decision not us Californians. Since we are going to be voting on it in November, we will see what the people want. You know though I heard that many people came from out of state to marry here and they are all spending money in our economy. Makes me kind of wonder about the reason for this decision. And, if we the people decide we don't want gay marriage will all those marriages be nullified? So retarded. And, we already voted on this issue before, rejecting it.
Governmentally they did, they said it was fine.
In my opinion no!! God clearly stated it was wrong, humans are made MAN AND WOMEN. Not gay or lesbian couples. I dont believe they did. And I am completley against it. And for those who say ';well if your happy'; Then why cant i marry my pillow? Or have kids with my dog? if it makes me happy right? NOT.
I will stick to the rules made by god for us, because he put us here on earth to make our own descisions. And if your descision is to marry of the same sex, fine, great for you, but do not involve me. Half the things in government are already corrupt.
NO.
