People on here are constantly claiming that marriage is a religious ceremony, so it can be restricted to only people that should be married under a certain religion.
But if that is true, then why does the US government perform marriages? I don;t remember reading anywhere in the Constitution the right for the government to perform religious ceremonies. If marriage is indeed a religious ceremony, the government needs to stop performing them ASAP!
The government could provide civil unions to those that want them, and anyone who wants to get married, a religious ceremony, goes to a religious institution. If marriage is a religious ceremony, why is it being performed by the US government?
we need the government out of the marriage business, the only role of the federal government should be building roads and national defenseIf marriage is a religious ceremony, why is it being performed by the US government?
It can be a religious ceremony, that's their argument. However, your angle is homosexual marriage. In speaking to my democrat colleagues, they believed some gays and lesbians pushed the issue too far and too aggressively. People started to see some gays and lesbians as selfish and self-absorbed, and disrespectful to organized religion, primarily Christianity. I believe in civil unions for tax purposes, employment benefits, etc. However, marriage should remain between a man and woman. Once the definition of marriage is broadened, pedophiles and beastiality afficionados will try to join the club. I am not, AM NOT, comparing homosexuals to pedophiles, but once marriage is broadened, it could be exploited by such people and activist judges. Plus, homosexual marriage can't be compared to interracial marriage because homosexuality is a lifestyle, not a race or ethnicity.
Thank you sir!
As far as the State is concerned, a marriage (not a civil union) is simply a contract between two consenting adults. You pay your money at the counter, sign a form, recite a secular vow for the government bureaucrat on duty and *bang* you're married. No religion involved.
And since the State has no standing to discriminate on sexual orientation grounds who can be party to a contract - assuming of course both are of legal age and citizens - then it would seem they have little right to disallow gay marriages.
Absolutely. The government should get out of the marriage business altogether.
Small governments means restricting government to things that can't be accomplished by private institutions. Marriage can be, quite easily, as it's done by private institutions all the time. Of course, conservatives chuck their small government principles out the window as soon as gays come up.
hahaha ya its me again. i answered ur other gay rights question (which was gay).. anyway this question aint as stupid so here it goes. the government has the power to perform marriages. certain people who are not religous do not think of marriage as a religous ceramony. they just think of it as a bond of love or whatever. people like that can be married by the government or judges and stuff. people who are religous can be married by a priest if they wish which i think is the best way because I believe that marriage is a religous ceramony.
The very words you use in your post Kevin will be played back to you at the judgment. God bless.
Matthew 7:15 (New King James Version)
You Will Know Them by Their Fruits
15 鈥淏eware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep鈥檚 clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
Because the government is usurping authority that rightfully belongs to the church. Real Christians clearly see and object to this trend. God ordained marriage, and defined it as being between a man and a woman. Mocking God is not wise.
Marriage is a religious ceremony to those who are religious. For those are are not, the method of getting married makes little difference.
I could not agree more. Just today, I was looking up info on this and how the gov. got into the business of marriage. Lots of vague answers seems it started, for us anyway, with England.
it is at its base not a religious issue.

more importantly... why is it performed by Elvis to people who just met 5 minutes ago over a ';prime rib buffet'; in Vegas?
How does the U.S. government perform marriages? Can you explain?
The government does it for taxes buddy! Everyone gets taxed, they just want the name right.
Dude give it up.
No matter what you type it won't change.
Your point is way off and Marriage is Defined in USA Federal and State Laws.
IS IT THAT you want to marry a man and it's illegal in your State?
