What the secret to a long and happy marriage?

My parents have been married for 40 years! How on earth can you put up with the same person for 40 years? When i asked my mam she said ';your dad makes me laugh'; What do you guys think?What the secret to a long and happy marriage?
I think your mum has hit the nail right on the head if a person has the ability to make you laugh you know you will be happy with them. laughter is whats missing in most of our lives now, it can heal one`s heart,makes you feel good when you`re down, lucky you to have a happy mum and dadWhat the secret to a long and happy marriage?
A strong beginning. Having the same moral and ethical makeup goes a long way in avoiding small arguments that escalate. Being open and discussing money, goals and problems. Learning to compromise and not using words as weapons. Yes there are times we get on each others nerves but then a day apart works wonders. We still have a date once a week, are courteous to each other and do not take offense at misdirected words. Yes I agree with mom. Laughter shows we still are happy with each other.
Communication. If you're able to talk about anything and everything, you should be able to work through anything and everything. And a strong sense of commitment and what it really is. Ppl don't seem to take marriage seriously anymore. They just decide once they're done they're done and don't really put forth the effort to work things out.
long distance lorry driving seems to be the answer don't take my word for it check it out everybody i know who has a long marriage and are still happy together are lorry drivers who are away a lot of the time
The secret to a long happy marriage is time apart. it gives you a break from each other and gives you something to talk about.

Never lose communication with each other, accept your husband/wife for what he/she has. Help him/her get through the hardships in your life and never blame him/her for anything.
