What was the turning point that resulted in Rick Santorum becoming the vocal advocate for gay marriage?

Why was he so vocally against it before but now can't seem to shut up about wanting to help gays get hitched? What was the turning point that resulted in Rick Santorum becoming the vocal advocate for gay marriage?
A lot of politicians completely reverse a lot of their positions when they are out of office and not planning to run again. A man says one thing when he thinks it will get him elected, and another thing when he doesn't care about getting elected.

Warren Ruddman is an excellent example of this. In office he co-sponsored Gramm-Ruddman-Hollings, a bill to balance the federal budget. The bill didn't work, of course. It allowed Congress to declare an 'emergency' to spend deficits, and they did this routinely for the five years the bill was in effect. Once out of office he explained that he knew the bill wouldn't work, it was just what his constitutents wanted him to do.

In office, Santorum made a name for himself as a gay-baiter. Out of office, this was no longer necessary. In fact he found he could get more attention by fighting for gay rights. What was the turning point that resulted in Rick Santorum becoming the vocal advocate for gay marriage?

Haven't seen evidence of the latter, but because of his vile anti-gay behavior as a rep from PA, it was suggested his name be used to define a sex act and a contest was held.

What are you talking about? I can't find any references to this...
I have no idea what got him started railing against gays. He cited his religious beliefs. I'm pleased to say he is no longer representing my state in Congress.
Yawn. Wouldn't happen to have any sources, wudja? Yawn.
