ok
I am personally offended that gay people call their joining togethor marriage. i think it is an insult to straight marriage, if they want to be different they can come up with their own names instead of defiling ours. please dont call be a gay hater or anything, i am the one being offended here, not them. Why do gay people insist on calling it marriage?
Call it the hokey pokey if you want to...as long as it affords me ALL of the EXACT SAME rights that any other has : )Why do gay people insist on calling it marriage?
look up the word 'marriage' on dictionary.com. it states a union or merge of two entities such as a marriage of lyrics and music for a song or a marriage of foods for a dish. it does state the legal union of man and wife as well, but when 2 things become ';married';; they join together and become one thing. i believe that regardless of the legalities in a matter, 2 people can be completely committed to each other and for all intensive purposes ';be married';. Its a label that says to the world ';this relationship is serious';.
I'm sorry if you're offended by the idea. Hopefully one day you'll be able to look past the labels and be happy for people that have found someone they want to spend the rest of their lives with; understanding that their choices don't impact your choices.
Have a good day!
Jimothy, I think that no matter what the term is, people will say, ';Oh, it's just like a gay marriage';. They used to be called civil unions years ago, if memory serves me correctly, but then it just evolved into marriage as a short cut.
As one other person said (and I apologize for not remembering the name), it makes things all legal. As it stands now, the deceased person's family can contest a will, but with a marriage, what is in the will will be unchallenged.
I hope that this explains things better.
I am glad you have brought this up, because I really am curious about why people, such as yourself, are offended by gay marriage. How does whether or not another person decides to get married or not effect you? This argument has always puzzled me. So please enlighten me.
I am a straight married female with many dear friends who are gay. Some of my friends have families and homes. They love their children as much as any straight parent. They are professional people and valuable members of society...basically the same as any one else. This is a civil rights issue and not one that should be decided at the whim of other people's personal preferences. What if you had brown eyes and your beloved had blue eyes, but society wouldn't let you marry because it was decided that marriage between people with different coloured eyes couldn't marry? At one time inter-racial marriages were illegal. In many states, even now, if it was put to a vote, I would bet that it was still be illegal.
I understand that these issues make people uncomfortable, but if human beings are going to continue to coexist on this planet, we really, really need to put our personal predjudices behind us. I know you said that you don't hate gay people, but it would probably be a good idea if you look inside of yourself to see what it is that bothers you about this, or, get to know some gay people so you can understand that they are really not so different from you, and, if that is something that you cannot do, then simply let others be, and don't worry yourself about it, because, and I say this with all due respect, their life is not your business.
Ok so ur offended? In what way? How is it an insult? Why do you call your joining together with a woman a marraige? The only insult thats happening is that your being ingnorant and selfish. What does it matter to YOU if two people that are in love want to unite and get married. I see absolutely no harm to ANYONE! Close minded people such as yourself have nothing better to do than to accuse and complain of different societies and cultures that arent your own. And we/re not trying to be different, how is it ';different';. its so dumb how you can worry about something like this when there is sooo much more serious things to complain about. Get over it already. Nobody is doing S**t to you. Its frustrating to me....who the hell are you to say who can marry who. Get a life and mind your own business.
I don't understand why you are so offended. Marriage between 2 consenting adults is about love.
What I find so offensive is the light-hearted attitude that many straight people use when entering into the sacrament of marriage. Why is the divorce rate among straight people so high? If marriage is so very important to the straight population, they should have more respect for it.
Beyond that - it's about equal rights. If you are against equal rights then you will eventually lose some of yours.
the last time I checked everybody was created equal?????? I have known gay couples who have been together for over 20 years but yet if something happens to one of them the other is screwed because of idiotic people like yourself. How can allowing gay people to get married and get the same benefits as other people who are married do, offend you.... Grow up and stop thinking that straight people are always right...if that was the case the divorce rate in this country wouldn't be as high as it is. I love the way that religion and state are supposed to be seperate but then they throw it together when it's convenient. god help this country from narrow minded individuals as yourself.
We think that just about everybody here has said everything already. We just make reference to your question about wanting to be different. You see that is the point, we don't want to be different. We want the same rights to enjoy our union as straight people do. This world is full of hatred perpetuated by people such as yourself. - Have a nice day.
I am personally offended that straight people think they can control if we get the chance to marry.
How is it insult to straight marriage? Does it really affect your marriage to your wife any if I am allowed to start a family with mine?
Like do you wake up every morning next to your wife and say ';You know, baby, my love for you is going downhill because of those gays.'; If you do then you need some help.
Well, you are a gay hater. You seem to think that you, as a straight person, have more rights than others. Marriage is a civil contract and has very specific rights and responsibilities under the law. What makes you so special that you have different rights than any gay couple that wish to commit hopefully for life?
Actually, YOU *are* offending us with your opinion as well. Why else would you find gay marriage an insult to straight marriage *unless* you were a gay hater? If you dont hate gays, why are you so offended that we want to have the same legal marital rights as you do???
Also, I just gave a huge detailed answer to a similar question, if you would like to view it. Basically, we want it to be called marriage, because a marriage is what gives the rights we are fighting for. Civil unions, contrary to popular belief, are not equal to marriage because by Federal and many state's laws, a same sex couple is ineligible for the same rights as a marriage, even *if* the union is called something else.

From the consensus of answers so far, seems you are the only one ';offended'; A new day is dawning and you might want to wake up a smell the real coffee. The LGBT community deserve the exact same rights and benefits as straights, so move on over and make room on the bench, as we are taking our rightful seats right next to you!
oh, poor little breeder gets his feelings hurt.....
GET OVER IT!!!!
Marriage is a legal binding financial contract between 2 people - nothing more.
Grow a brain and do your freakin research. Gay marriage were around a LONG time ago. We are taking them back. You can be part of the problem or the solution. Whatever you choose, just stay out of our way.
Because one definition of marriage is ';any close or intimate association or union.'; Which can apply to males and females, females and females, or males and males.
If you have a problem with the English language, learn a different one.
If you aren't a gay hater or homophobe, then why is it that gay marriage is ';defiling'; straight marriage? You just sound like a teenager who doesn't like gays because its icky or perverted. Which it isn't.
i am offended that SOME str8 people think they have a corner on the institution of marriage. today, in 2009, marriage is about love and commitment. we're gonna win, it's only a matter of time. hooray for rainbows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
Get over it! Why should you care either way? Whether or not gay people are allowed to get married will affect your life in 0 ways.
Marriage is the legal union of two people. By the year 2020 all of the USA will allow gay marriage!
Why do you care?
A marriage is a joining together. It doesn't even really have to refer to people or living things at all for that matter. Freak out less over semantics please.
But we don't want to be different, don't you understand? There are many rights that marriages grant, and we want them. We are humans, we bleed the same way as you. Get it? I hope so.
I am personally offended by your stupid name. I think your an insult to the human race (do you see how that sounds?) you sound ignorant.. And ps....you ARE a gay hater. Thats just like a racist saying...im not racist...BUT....
To prove their love , nothing wrong with that.
Straight people are always doing the most GODDAM thing to marriage. Straight people got no rights to decide whether we call marriage or not.
wtf?
hahahahaha....ignorant much?
Do you realize in a time of hate, a depression, war... You're still bitching about complete strangers being in love?
If it offends you, don't marry any men.
